Permission to Pause

As we approach the long weekend here in Ireland, many of us are looking forward to a break, but how often do we actually give ourselves permission to truly rest?

So often, weekends (especially long ones) can become crammed with catch-up tasks, social plans, and pressure to “make the most of it.” Beneath that hustle lies an unspoken fear: What if I’m missing out?

But what if we turned that on its head?

What if, this weekend, rest became an act of radical wellbeing?

What if choosing not to do was actually choosing something powerful?

Rest as Rebellion

We live in a culture that glorifies busy. Productivity is praised, exhaustion is worn like a badge of honour, and our minds are rarely still. But in the pursuit of doing, we forget that being is equally essential.

Mental rest isn’t just about switching off your devices or taking a nap (though both are wonderful!). It’s about creating space between your thoughts, softening your inner dialogue, and allowing your nervous system to downshift.

This weekend, instead of running on autopilot or giving in to the pressure of constant engagement, I invite you to see rest as an intentional, even rebellious act. It says:

“I will not burn myself out. I choose to protect my peace.”

From FOMO to JOMO

That fear of missing out? It’s real. We’re hardwired to seek connection and inclusion. But FOMO often leads us away from ourselves, scattering our attention and energy.

JOMO: the Joy of Missing Out, is about reclaiming your time and attention. It’s that warm exhale when you realise you don’t have to attend everything, reply immediately, or fill your calendar to feel valuable.

JOMO invites you to stay in pyjamas a little longer! To read instead of scroll. To take the slow walk, the deep breath, the afternoon nap…

Try This: A Mental Rest Ritual

This weekend, choose one small ritual that gives your mind a break:

✨ A quiet morning without your phone

✨ A walk with no destination

✨ Journaling with the prompt: “What do I need to let go of to feel more rested?”

✨ Listening to your favourite music or podcast without multitasking

Rest doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just has to be yours.

You’re Allowed to Stop

You’re allowed to pause.

You’re allowed to take the pressure off.

You’re allowed to find joy in stillness.

This long weekend, I invite you to feel the quiet strength that comes from doing less and being more. And may you discover that missing out… might be the very thing your soul is craving.
