Welcome to the final blog in our series Everyday Guidance from Spirit. Beyond body signals, joy, and emotions, there’s another form of guidance always available: the still small voice within.
Some people call it intuition. Metaphysical teachers and New Thought teachers have referred to it as the “voice of God within us” or “the spontaneous knowing of the truth”.
For our purposes, I’m going to refer to this form of guidance as the “still small voice” of Spirit. Whatever you call it, it’s that deep, calm knowing that seems to come from nowhere and guides us in a direction that serves our growth and developing our own awareness that we are indeed Spiritual beings.
If it is the case then that guidance is always there, who do so many of us feel we don’t hear it?
This inner voice is soft, steady, and clear but it can easily be drowned out by the noise of fear, busyness, and other people’s opinions. Spirit will not shout over the din. It waits until you are still enough to hear. In fact, Gandhi is quoted as saying that the still small voice is as loud as our willingness to listen. The starting point therefore is to get quite and make the space to listen and hear.
Some of the ways you could make that space would be to:
✨ Spend time in nature without headphones or distractions.
✨ Journal freely, without editing, on questions like What is mine to do today?
✨ Sit in silence for a few minutes each morning, simply noticing your breath and paying attention to the thoughts that come when you have settled your nervous system in this way.
Everything can be a source of Spirit’s guidance to us. In nature, in your home, when you open a page of a book, simply ask the question, what message do you have for me? Then pause and listen to what comes in response. You may hear or read a word that resonates, you may simply experience a sense of calm or relief from your worries, you may remember the lines of a song or a poem that fits. Therein lie your answers.
It is so important in such moments to not question what comes! Trust that the idea or thought, the memory or song that drops into your mind is the answer. It isn’t always an answer that you want, but you will know that it is the answer that you are being guided towards.
At this stage the question I am most often asked is how do you discern between the voice of Spirit or the voice of my own intuition versus the voice of fear or ego? So let me give you some help with that today.
Spirit’s guidance feels expansive, steady, and grounded. Here are some ways to recognise it:
✨ It speaks with clarity, not confusion.
✨ It feels calm, even when it’s nudging you toward something scary or new.
✨ It’s persistent, the thought or idea keeps returning.
Fear or ego, on the other hand, feels urgent, loud, and contractive. It can have a kind of berating quality to it, and it can frequently change its mind!
Just as you build your relationship with another person by spending time together, it is the same with Spirit. As you follow the guidance here for tuning into Spirit’s guidance, over time you’ll come to recognise Spirit’s voice as quickly as you’d recognise that of a dear friend.
As you decide to tune into and pay attention to the still small voice within, the final step in building that relationship is to act on the small intuitive nudges you are getting.
Taking action on the guidance received is what will keep the flow of ideas coming and the more it will build your trust.
Now that you know how it works, perhaps there is some guidance that you’ve already been aware of? Are you willing to act on it now?
And if you are seeking guidance, what step could you take from the suggestions here to create space to better hear Spirit’s voice?
My wish for you today is that these simple practices will support you in deepening into a way of living where you feel supported, connected and guided every single day.
If this series has spoken to you, know that this is exactly the kind of awareness we nurture in my coaching and workshops. We explore the inner and outer tools for creating a life that feels aligned, joyful, and deeply supported by Spirit.
You can find out more about my upcoming Vision Workshop on 11 and 12 October. I’d love to walk alongside you as you deepen into your own guidance.
Because you are never walking alone.
